Vision Board: Images to Set the Tone for My New Year
Sometimes I need to see it to believe it.
I woke up on January 1st and felt itchy. I was looking around my house and had the overwhelming urge to remove absolutely everything and start over. I settled on tackling my least favorite task: taking down Christmas decorations. To be clear, I’m not someone who hates the act of taking down Christmas because I’m sad it’s over (I’m usually ready to say goodbye)— what I hate are the boxes and bins and dust and bubble wrap and the way my house looks like hell for a few days while I pack everything up. But oh how sweet that post-clean feeling is.
When everything is tucked away, when I’ve wiped every surface with a multi-purpose spray and vacuumed every last pine needle, I finally get to light a candle (the universal symbol for a clean house), and I am reborn. The house always looks and feels a little naked, the lack of decor feels stark. But in that, there is more room to breathe and invite newness in. Even if it’s cold, I crack a window ever so slightly and let fresh air permeate the space. Maybe I’ll even diffuse some essential oils.
If January doesn’t ignite that clean slate, new year new you energy, you’re not alone. Many people, cultures and religions around the world celebrate the new year in March, which when you think about, makes a lot more sense. January is still the dead of winter. A time to hunker down, go slow, and take it easy. March brings spring, new life, and fresh flowers. Personally, I like to think of this time, Jan through mid-March, as a prolonged intention setting period. I take the time to really visualize how I want my year to feel, how I want it to look, and I start planting the seeds so come spring, we have blooms.
I find looking at and saving images that feel like big deep breaths help me during this time. So I thought I would share some below with little notes in case you’re in need of a visual palette cleanse.
Pairs incredibly well with Norah Jones’ first and second album.
Happy 2025, I can’t wait for all that’s coming!
